Questions Before Therapy Begins
FAQs
Having questions before seeing a therapist is not only normal, it’s encouraged! I’ve answered some FAQs here, but if you have any specific questions that are not addressed on this site, please reach out!
-
Getting started is simple. You can reach out through my contact form, email, or phone to request an appointment. I’ll respond with information about availability, scheduling, fees, insurance, and next steps. Before your first appointment, you’ll complete some intake paperwork through a secure client portal.
-
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We’ll talk about what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, relevant background information, and what you hope to gain from our work together. You do not need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say—we’ll take it one step at a time.
-
Therapy sessions can be anywhere between 30-60 minutes. Most individual sessions are 45-55 minutes.
-
Many clients begin with weekly sessions, although the frequency will depend on your needs, goals, schedule, and clinical recommendations. We can adjust the frequency over time as your needs change.
-
Your privacy is important. Information shared in therapy is confidential and protected by law and professional ethics. There are a few legal and safety-related exceptions to confidentiality, which will be reviewed with you before beginning treatment.
-
I accept and am in-network with the following insurances: BCBS of MA, Harvard Pilgrim, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Optum, and some Tufts plans. You are encouraged to contact your insurance company to verify your mental health benefits, including your deductible, copayment, coinsurance, and any authorization requirements.
-
My private-pay fee is $100-225 per session. Fees may vary depending on the type or length of appointment. Payment information will be reviewed before services begin. I also provide sliding scale appointments if necessary.
If I am not in-network with your insurance plan, you may be able to use out-of-network benefits. I can provide a superbill or receipt for services when appropriate, which you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
-
Finding the right therapist matters. If you have concerns about our work together, I encourage you to bring them up so we can discuss them openly. If it seems that another provider would better meet your needs, I can help you explore appropriate referrals.
-
This practice is not a crisis or emergency service, and I am not available for immediate or 24/7 support. Messages, emails, and voicemails are reviewed during regular business hours and may not receive an immediate response.
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, are in immediate danger, or are concerned that you may harm yourself or someone else, please call 911, go to the nearest emergency department, or contact 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you are outside the United States, please contact your local emergency services or crisis support line.
If you are experiencing increased distress but are not in immediate danger, please contact your established supports, your primary care provider, or an appropriate local crisis resource.
